Abstract

Breastfeeding (BF) is the most appropriate food for the baby, as well as providing benefits for the mother and the bond between the two. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) up to 6 months of age and its
extension as a complementary food up to 2 years of age, however its prevalence is below these recommendations worldwide. Objective: to present updated information on the global prevalence and benefits of BF for the mother-baby pair. Method: Review of the
literature in databases and other bibliographic sources. Articles on the benefits of BF and its prevalence worldwide were selected. Results: BF levels worldwide are below WHO recommendations. Non-initiation or abandonment of BF depends on emotional, cultural,
occupational and economic factors, among others. BF generates benefits in the physical and emotional health of the mother-baby binomial, particularly for the development of the baby’s intestinal microbiota, avoiding gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases,
asthma, and overweight; and in the mother by preventing breast and ovarian cancer.
Conclusions: Evidence shows that human milk is the most suitable food for infants. The efforts of governments, health teams and society as a whole should be directed towards the promotion of breastfeeding and the protection of the pairing, both in terms of access to parenting resources and psychological factors from early development
